KARACHI: Omar Shahid, the US based son of slain MD KESC Shahid Hamid, Monday said his father was assassinated because he was undertaking action against a ‘corrupt MQM mafia in his organisation’.
Speaking during Geo News program “Aaj Shahzaib Khanzada Kay Saath’, Omar Shahid said a mafia group allegedly belonging to Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) was active in KESC.
"My father was carrying out action against the corrupt workers in KESC," he said, adding that as a result of this some of MQM leaders issued threats to his father before he was murdered.
Omar Shahid said even the senior leaders of MQM, including Altaf Hussain, had been nominated in the murder challan.
He said the record of Saulat Mirza’s telephone shows that the first or second dialed number from his phone was to the MQM's International Secretariat, London.
Omar Shahid said it is high time Saulat Mirza was executed, adding now there is no further need of the latter who has been convicted by the court.
He said now the authorities should go after other MQM leaders whose names are included in the challan.
To a question, he said he and his mother continued to receive threats from MQM leaders in the years that followed after the killing of his father.
“MQM leaders continued to persuade us to come to some sort of understanding under which Saulat Mirza could be freed,” he said.
He said he and his mother are ready to extend every possible cooperation to the authorities in Pakistan to see justice is done.
When asked if he would fly back to Karachi from New York if his cooperation is needed if the case is reopened against other nominees in the murder case of his father, Omar Shahid said: “I can go anywhere; I can even go to hell to get justice”.
The murder case of MD KESC Shahid Hamid is drawing media attention once again following the startling disclosures from his assassin Saulat Mirza, a former MQM worker, made hours before his scheduled hanging on March 19.
However, his execution had been postponed three times since his video statement went on air. The latest stay was granted by President Mamnoon Hussain to Saulat Mirza for 30 days starting April 1.
