UN unanimously adopts Pak resolution on ‘drug abuse in educational institutions’

The United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), during the sixty-first regular session, has unanimously adopted Pakistan's resolution on "strengthening efforts to prevent drug abuse in educational settings”.

VIENNA: The United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), during the sixty-first regular session, has unanimously adopted Pakistan's resolution on "strengthening efforts to prevent drug abuse in educational settings”.

According to foreign office statement, the resolution was adopted during the sixty-first regular session of the Commission in Vienna, the meeting in this connection was convened from March 12 to 16, 2018.

The Pakistani delegation was led by Federal Secretary for Narcotics Control, Mehmood Iqbal and accompanied by Maj Gen Mussarrat Nawaz Malik Director General Anti Narcotics Force (ANF).

on the occasion, Secretary Narcotics Control said that the historic resolution would prove landmark in the efforts across all the member countries to eliminate drugs from their academic institutions

Pakistan's initiative to table this resolution was highly appreciated as it underscored the need for enhanced efforts, including policy interventions and comprehensive drug prevention programmes, to protect the students, particularly children and youth from the menace of drugs and to make educational settings free from this abuse.

The resolution drew attention of the Commission to the common challenges of drug use among children and youth in schools, colleges and universities settings.

The resolution emphasizes the crucial role of educational settings in promoting healthy lifestyles among youth and calls for close coordination among law enforcement agencies, education and health authorities at domestic level.

It reflected political commitment of the global community to promote international cooperation through exchange of experiences and good practices and technical assistance to address the menace of drug abuse in educational settings.

Pakistan is an elected member, for the four-year term (2016-19), of the the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs that is the leading policy making body within the United Nations system on matters related to drugs.
