Sixth population census set to begin on March 15

ISLAMABAD: Preparations for the sixth census have been finalized and it is going to be started this week as announced by State Minister for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb here on Sunday.

She was speaking at a joint press conference along with Director-General ISPR Major General Asif Ghafoor to give a detailed briefing on the forthcoming census.

The census will be divided into two phases, the first will be held from March 15 to April 15 while the second phase will be held from April 25 to May 25, said the minister.

DG ISPR Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor said that the Pakistan Army would provide full security during the sixth census and 200,000 troops would be deployed.

He said that 800 master trainers have trained more people to facilitate during the drive.

The DG ISPR said that people should immediately report any suspicious activity.

He said that a fine of Rs 50,000 and an imprisonment of six months would be awarded to persons providing wrong information.

State Minister for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb said that locals would be utilized for census and she also said that transgender, for the first time, would be included in the population census.

The state minister said that a budget of Rs 18 billion has been allocated for the census. She added that six billion rupees are reserved each for Army and civilians for their facilitation work.

She said that those with dual nationality would also be a part of it and green-card holding Afghan refugees would also be included in the drive.

The state minister said that one day has been specifically allotted to homeless people.

Over 450,000 government employees have been trained to take part in the sixth census of the country which will begin on March 15.

    Census-2017 is very important for 2018 general election, I want to thank Chief Justice, PM Nawaz Sharif and Army Chief and all four provinces' CM, Governors and President of Azad Kashmir to have this Census-2017 completed within the time-frame.
