KARACHI: MQM-Pakistan chief Dr Farooq Sattar on Monday cried foul with regard to the population census that is about to be held, claiming that the population of Sindh was being shown lesser on paper than its actual size.
Speaking to media, the former city nazim stated that according to a plan, the population census was being conducted first in Karachi, Hyderabad and Mirpurkhas before being held in the rest of the province.
"The census must be carried out across the whole province at the same time," he demanded. "We have asked Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Ishaq Dar and the head of the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics to ensure this," he added.
Sattar alleged that a plot had been hatched, according to which the population of Karachi, Hyderabad and Mirpukhas is being wrongly shown less on paper as opposed to what it actually is. He further stated that owing to this, the people from these three cities were facing difficulties in securing jobs and were being denied their basic rights.
The first four censuses were duly conducted in the years 1951, 1961, 1972 and 1981. There was a gap of 17 years after which the fifth census took place in 1998. The national population census will begin from March 15 and will involve 200,000 army personnel as well as 91,000 civilian enumerators.
