RAWALPINDI: Russian Ambassador to Pakistan Alexey Yurevich Dedov called on COAS Gen Bajwa today and discussed matters related to regional security, a statement from the ISPR said.

The envoy condemned recent terrorist incidents in the country and expressed grief on behalf of his country and acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts in fight against terrorism and initiatives for economic growth, it added.

The COAS thanked the ambassador for Russian concerns, acknowledgements and ongoing cooperation between the two countries and its armed forces.

Gen Bajwa said that enhanced Pakistan-Russia military to military cooperation will have positive impact on regional security.

The visiting ambassador appreciated the launching of military operation Raddul Fasaad, the army launched after a series of terror incident in which over 100 people were killed and hundreds injured.

In September last year, Pakistan and Russia conducted their first joint military exercises in Pakistan in a historic moment of cooperation between the former Cold War rivals, a development which angered India.

The two countries are working in several areas to enhance mutual relationships.

In 2014, Russia lifted its arms embargo on Pakistan, and in 2015 Pakistan used the opportunity to buy four Mi-35 gunship helicopters. Also in 2015, General Raheel visited Moscow and laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
