KARACHI: A thick cloud of black smoke covered the sky in old city area of the city as a fire erupted at a three-storey building on Friday.
The two fire tenders that were dispatched to the area to contain the fire ran out of water before four others were sent to the scene. Frenzied shopkeepers and laborers were seen pouring water with buckets on the raging fire which seemed to affect nearby buildings.
According to Geo News, the fire erupted at the ground floor of medicine godown and the fire tenders were facing difficulties in reaching the area due to traffic jam in rush hours. The rescue officials feared the blaze might lead to collapse of the building.
The Fire Brigade department in the city has long faced criticism for lack of resources and skills to put out fires. A fire at a factory had killed over 200 people in 2012 in Baldia Town area of the city while similar incidents had inflicted loss of worth millions of rupees to city's economy as fires swallowed entire factories.
