ISLAMABAD: Former Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, said on Wednesday that it was Imran Khan's democratic and legal right to stage a protest against the government. He wondered why the federal government was panicking over what would simply be a democratic move by the PTI chairman.

During an event pertaining to the book 'A History of the Judiciary in Pakistan' penned by veteran lawyer Hamid Khan, Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry said that placing obstacles in the path of peaceful and democratic protests was not the right thing to do.

"After the lawyers movement, the door to any extra-constitutional step has been closed," he said. "Hence, we must now look to improve governance in the country," he added.

Former Chief Justice Jawad S. Khawja said that the governmental and judicial systems have become outdated and only those nations thrive who value their language and culture.

Hamid Khan said that in his book, the entire history of Pakistan's judiciary was mentioned and all important events pertaining to it.

PTI chief Imran Khan had been at the forefront of the lawyers' movement for the restoration of Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, which began when the former CJP was ousted by military dictator General (r) Pervez Musharraf. However, Imran placed blame a couple of years later on Iftikhar Chaudhry for being involved in rigging general election 2013 in favour of PML-N.
