Hugh Jackman, who is reportedly set to play pirate Long John Silver, has revealed why he agreed to star in Sir Ridley Scott’s upcoming adaptation of Treasure Island.
Speaking to Variety, the Deadpool & Wolverine actor admitted that he was "really" impressed by the script written by Adolescent writer Jack Thorne.
Jackman said, "Really, it was the script. I know Ridley and Ridley goes: 'Dude.'"
He explained, "He sent me the script, and I just read it. I had never read the book, had never seen the movie. I knew various things about it."
The actor also shared that he was surprised to discover how many familiar pirate ideas came from the original story.
Gushing over Thorne’s work, Jackman said, "I was like: 'Oh, they came from that.' And Jack Thorne, who famously wrote Adolescence and did Harry Potter for the stage show - this script was just undeniable. I was just like: 'Oh, this is amazing.' That was it."
Also, Jackman noted that the story was suspenseful and kept him guessing until the end.
"All I knew was I had no idea where it was going, and I was very surprised but satisfied at the end," he explained.
For those unaware, the film tells the story of young Jim Hawkins, who finds a map of a buried treasure and begins a dangerous sea journey that brings him into conflict with Long John Silver.
Scott hopes to begin filming on November 1.
