Max Winkler makes surprising confession about directing ‘Monster’s new season

Max Winkler opened up about why comedy is harder to direct.

It is worth noting here that the new crime drama, Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story which is a fourth season of the Monster anthology series, featured a star-studded cast including, Ella Beatty as Lizzie Borden, Vicky Krieps as Bridget 'Maggie’ Sullivan, Charlie Hunnam as Andrew Borden, Rebecca Hall as Abby Borden, Billie Lourd as Emma Borden, Jessica Barden as Nance O’Neil, Joey Pollari as John Morse, and Sarah Paulson as Aileen Wuornos.

In a recent interview with People Magazine, the movie’s director, Max Winkler said that the co-creators, Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s ability to “show the various multitudes and levels and layers of people” who “become either a legend or cast aside as crazy” is what drew him to the series.

He went on to say, “[They] bring to life what it was like to be a part of that time period and how circumstances of where you’re from and who you are and where you’re born can turn you into somebody that people call a monster.”

The director also opened up about the challenges of directing comedy, saying, “It’s a comedy in a lot of ways.”

“And directing comedy, in my opinion, is significantly harder than directing straight dramatic stuff,” he added.

Max hoped that the movie would let the audience see “that a lot of things have changed, and a lot of things haven’t changed” historically, “I’m so proud of the cast on this show and what they did,” Max added.

“I think it’s a new flavor for this series. I think it’s funny and I think it’s really romantic. I’m excited for people to see it,” he further said.

It is pertinent to mention here that the season four of the Monster anthology series was released on September 13, 2026 on Netflix.
