Lionel Richie's 'American Idol' job at risk as producers make major decision

Lionel Richie could lose his American Idol job because the show's producers plan to replace him.

On Wednesday, an insider spilled to Naughty But Nice that the 77-year-old singer's recent health scare has cast doubt on his future in one of TV's biggest singing competitions.

For those unaware, Lionel recently underwent a procedure for atrial fibrillation after being hospitalized. Following that, the Hello singer canceled his three concerts.

However, according to sources, American Idol cannot afford to wait any longer.

“This is the conversation nobody wants to have, but Idol has to protect Idol,” the source said. “Lionel is beloved, but if there is any question about whether he can handle the schedule, they need someone else ready to sit in that chair.”

As per the confidant, the uncertainty surrounding Lionel has accelerated discussions regarding the judging panel.

“They’re already discussing names,” the insider said. “Nobody is firing Lionel today, but his seat is no longer something producers can simply assume is filled. His health has changed the conversation.”

Lionel remains the top priority for the producers of the ABC show, but television schedules wait for no one.

“Lionel wants to come back, and Idol wants Lionel,” the source added. “But wanting him back and knowing he can do the job are two different things. They need a Plan B.”

For those unversed, American Idol will return for Season 25 in 2027.
