Via Rail train crashes into vehicle near Fallowfield Station in Ottawa

A woman has been taken to hospital after a Via Rail train struck a vehicle near Fallowfield Station in Ottawa on Sunday afternoon.

Emergency crews responded to the railway crossing at Fallowfield Road near Woodroffe Avenue at around 3:30 PM, Ottawa Fire Services spokesperson Nick DeFazio said.

Firefighters found the heavily damaged vehicle had been pushed several dozen feet into a bush.

One person was trapped inside and crews freed her within about five minutes.

Ottawa paramedics said the woman, who is in her 40s, was taken to hospital in stable condition. Police said her injuries were not life-threatening.

“The railway crossing signals were confirmed to have been operating properly at the time of the collision,” Ottawa police said.

Via Rail confirmed nobody aboard Train 40 was injured and passengers later left the train at Fallowfield Station and were provided alternative transport.

“We recognize that this situation had an impact on our customers’ travel plans and regret the inconvenience it caused,” a Via Rail spokesperson said.

Via Rail said service resumed at around 7:30 PM although several other trains were delayed.

The Transportation Safety Board has been notified.

Fallowfield Road remained closed between Holitman Avenue and Woodroffe Avenue as police continued investigating the collision.
