While external businesses have shown willingness to pay a premium for scarce compute, pivoting into a direct rental model pits Meta head-to-head against established cloud titans like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.

Compounding this is the ongoing multi-billion-dollar operational loss from Reality Labs or metaverse division, leaving investors hyper-sensitive to how efficiently capital is being deployed.

Zuckerberg argued that AI-powered personal assistants could become a mass-market product used by billions of consumers, while business agents could eventually help companies handle customer service, sales and marketing.

Beyond broad references to subscriptions and enterprise services, he offered few specifics on how those businesses would justify Meta's massive AI spending.

Additionally, the Meta founder has defended the strategy by framing raw compute as the ultimate strategic moat.

Rather than viewing it as a short-term play for quick cash, Meta views owning the underlying infrastructure as vital to securing its long-term dominance in foundational AI models and personalized agents.
