Mystikal sentenced for 20 years for third-degree rape
Mystikal pleaded guilty to the charges in March 2026
Mystikal has reportedly been sentenced to 20 years in prison in connection with his 2022 rape case.
According to ABC affiliate WBRZ and Louisiana First News, on Tuesday, June 16, the 55-year-old Louisiana rapper, whose real name is Michael Lawrence Tyler, was sentenced for third-degree rape, a reduced charge to which he pleaded guilty in March.
The Shake Ya Ass rapper's victim reportedly asked the judge to give Tyler the maximum sentence allowed as she recounted details of her rape.
"If I did that to you, I deserve the max sentence," Tyler responded, according to WBRZ.
Ahead of his sentencing, the musician's attorney filed a motion on Friday, June 12 asking to withdraw his guilty plea, as he "did not have sufficient opportunity to fully consider the consequences" of his plea deal before agreeing to it, as reported by WBRZ.
The motion claimed that Tyler was "under significant emotional distress and felt substantial pressure to make an immediate decision" when he made the plea.
The Danger rapper initially entered his guilty plea in March, when his charge was downgraded from first-degree rape.
Prosecutors decided not to pursue nine other charges, including simple criminal damage, false imprisonment, domestic abuse battery by strangulation and simple robbery, by filing legal notices known as nolle prosequi.
The charges stemmed from an August 2022 incident. The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office said in a press release that an individual was hospitalized in relation to minor injuries sustained during a sexual assault allegedly involving Tyler.
Tyler was arrested and booked into the Ascension Parish Jail. He was charged with first-degree rape, simple robbery, domestic abuse battery by strangulation, false imprisonment and simple criminal damage to property.
The alleged victim was reportedly an acquaintance of Tyler, and was at his Prairieville home when he accused her of stealing money from him before punching her, choking her, pulling braids out of her hair and taking her keys and phone to prevent her from leaving, according to WBRZ citing an arrest warrant.
She also reportedly alleged to investigators that she found drugs in the residence during the altercation, and alleged that Tyler was having mood swings before the rape occurred.
He allegedly used her phone to send himself the money he accused her of taking and then allowed her to leave.
At the time, Tyler was already a lifetime registered sex offender due to a 2003 sexual assault conviction for which he spent six years in federal prison.
After being released in 2010, he was also indicted in 2017 on separate rape and kidnapping charges and spent 18 months in jail before being released on a $3 million bond, according to the Associated Press.
