Apple drops iOS 26.5: What you need to know about RCS security and Maps ads
Find out what’s new for iPhone users in the latest update
Apple has officially released iOS 26.5, the latest version of its mobile operating system. As the recent update focuses on security and cross-platform communication, it also signals a shift in Apple's monetization strategy for its services.
The company has finally enabled end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for RCS (Rich Communication Services) messages sent between iPhones and Android devices.
This update ensures that high-quality media, read receipts and typing indicators shared with Android users are now as secure as standard iMessages. E2EE is active by default but can be toggled manually in the Messages section of the Settings app.
Apple is officially bringing paid advertising to Maps. Sponsored listings will appear in search results and the new “Suggested Places” section, clearly labeled to distinguish them from organic results.
This new section uses local trends and your recent search history to recommend nearby points of interest. A new “Pride Luminance” wallpaper has been added, designed to match the 2026 Pride Apple Watch band and face.
When connecting Apple's accessories like a Magic Keyboard via USB-C, the iPhone will now automatically pair via Bluetooth simultaneously.
It is pertinent to note that for those switching to Android, the “Switch to Android" tool now offers granular control over message attachments, letting users choose to transfer all data for just the last 30 days.
The update includes underlying support for third-party headphones and smartwatches to access features like “Proximity Pairing” and “Live Activities,” though full public rollout for these may still be staggered. iOS 26.5 may also bring a new feature for users in the EU.
Under the EU’s Digital Markets Act, Apple must allow iPhone features-such as notifications, Live Activities and Airpods pairing- to work with third-party devices.
Additionally, Apple Books now includes a “Trophies and Medals” gamification system to reward users for reaching reading and audiobook milestones. The wait is nearly over, as iOS 27 is also coming later this year; we expect to learn more about it during WWDC 2026 in June.
