Tornado emergencies issued: ‘total destruction’ reported in Mississippi and Alabama outbreak
Thunderstorms and tornadoes struck across the Mississippi and Alabama on Wednesday evening
The severe weather outbreak on Wednesday has left a path of destruction across the Deep South. According to several other reports across the region, at least two confirmed destructive tornadoes moved through Mississippi.
The National Weather Service (NSW) issued rare Tornado Emergencies, which are reserved for the most dangerous, life-threatening situations where a large tornado is confirmed to be moving into a populated area.
The hardest-hit areas are located in Mississippi and central Alabama particularly along the 1-20 corridor.
Multiple homes have been destroyed and injuries reported as at least two violent, destructive tornadoes tore through parts of Mississippi, prompting rare “particularly dangerous situation” tornado emergency warnings and rescue efforts in some of the hardest-hit areas as reported by the CNN.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) and local responders are currently conducting door-to-door checks in the hardest-hit zones.
In line with forecasters, rare language to emphasize their high confidence in a long-track violent tornado threat.
While the initial lines of supercells have passed some areas, the severe weather threat remains for southern Alabama and parts of the Florida Panhandle through Thursday morning.
In addition to tornadoes, the system is producing lightning and significant flash flooding due to rainfall exceeding 5 inches in some spots.
