KARACHI: Historical park of Karachi, Jahangir Park Saddar, needs development and maintenance on the pattern of the Askari Park of Old Sabzi Mandi, Shahra-e-Jamia, demand citizens.
Jahangir Park, which used to be main tourist attraction of Karachi, is presently occupied by hundreds of pushcart vendors, who have razed its walls and grills and they park their pushcarts in it, mainly selling cheap fruit. A portion of the park is also occupied by an illegal bus terminal of G-3 minibus owners.
In past, the Askari Park used to be a flea market of fruit and vegetable vendors, and when the Old Sabzi Mandi was shifted to the Superhighway, the rangers developed it in a beautiful park named Askari Park. This park is amongst the most beautiful parks of the city and still being managed in similar way.
The citizens of Karachi have requested the higher authorities to hand over the historical Jahangir Park to the rangers for developing it on the model of Askari Park to revive its beauty and make it a recreational place for citizens, instead of a den of drug abusers, illegal parking ground for minibuses and flea market for fruit vendors.
