Stellan Skarsgard teases 'Mamma Mia!' sequel plot detail
Stellan Skarsgard talked about the highly anticipated 'Mamma Mia!' sequel after his 2026 Golden Globe win
Stellan Skarsgård is excited for a possible third Mamma Mia movie and thinks Meryl Streep could return.
"Everybody can be brought back in the movies," Skarsgård, 74, told Us Weekly in the 2026 Golden Globe Awards press room on Sunday, January 11. "In the movies, it’s fantastic!"
"A lot of people are working on it to bring it back," Skarsgård shared.
The actor, who bagged the Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe this year, added with a sly smile, "She’s not dead, you know! Meryl Streep [as Donna] is not dead!"
The much-anticipated sequel seems to be moving forward, with actress Amanda Seyfried — who portrayed Donna’s daughter, Sophie — confirming as much to Deadline in September 2025.
Mamma Mia producer Judy Craymer told Variety in 2023 that the movie will happen eventually. She noted that pop band ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus always need convincing since the films are inspired by their music.
"I’m in the privileged position that I have Universal Studios wanting to do it, who I love working with, and I have a storyline," Cramer, 68, said. "It just always takes a certain amount of time with Mamma Mia. [ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus] always take a certain amount of convincing. I don’t know how much more convincing they’re gonna have because everybody wants another film."
Stellan Skarsgård won the Golden Globe for his role in Sentimental Value.
