KARACHI: A session of the Sindh assembly will be held today to elect the new Chief Minister of the province after which the Governor of Sindh will administer oath to the new chief executive.

An electoral contest will be conducted between the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) Syed Murad Ali Shah and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Khurram Sher Zaman for the seat. The opposition parties of Sindh, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have decided not to take part in the voting process.

The Sindh assembly session would be held at 3:00 pm and would be presided by Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani. The election would take place through a ‘show of hand’ procedure.

The newly-elected Chief Minister would then take an oath of his office at the Governor House on the same evening. The ceremony will also be attended by former Prime Ministers Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and Raja Pervez Ashraf.

Following the acceptance of Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah’s resignation by Sindh Governor Dr. Ishratul Ibad Khan, the Sindh Cabinet stood dissolved hence the new cabinet would be selected by the new Chief Minister after he has been sworn in.
