The mass shooting at Bondi beach’s Jewish festival has sent shockwaves across the world as 15 innocent people lost their lives in the deadly tragedy.
According to Australian police official authorities, two gunmen, a father and son duo, are charged with committing the massacre by using legally obtained firearms.
The alleged gunmen possessed a firearm licence with six weapons registered to father for recreational hunting. All six weapons have been recovered, according to police.
As reported by Reuters, the son, 24-year-old Naveed Akram was arrested at the scene and taken to a Sydney hospital with multiple injuries. However, his 50-year-old father, Sajid Akram, was shot dead by law enforcement authorities on the spot. The police did not confirm their names yet.
As a result of the mass shooting, around forty people have been admitted to hospital, along with two police officers with critical wounds.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the situation in Bondi as “shocking and distressing,” calling for the enactment of tougher gun laws in connection to the fatal shooting.
"This afternoon, I will put on the agenda of the national cabinet tougher gun laws, including limits on the number of guns that can be used or licensed by individuals, and a review of licences over a period of time," Albanese told the media.
"People’s circumstances change. People can be radicalised over a period of time. Licences should not be in perpetuity. The Australian government will take to the national Cabinet this afternoon a proposal to empower agencies to examine what can be done in this area,” he added.
According to witnesses, the assault at the crowded beach lasted about 10 minutes, killing 15 people and injuring dozens of people.
