Liam Gallagher, Ian Brown lead tributes to late Stone Roses star Mani
Gary “Mani” Mounfield remembered as fans and musicians pay tribute
Tributes are being shared across the music world following the death of Gary “Mani” Mounfield, the influential English bassist known for shaping the sound of The Stone Roses and later Primal Scream.
News of his passing on November 20 was confirmed by his brother, Greg Mounfield, who wrote on Facebook: “It is with the heaviest hearts that I have to announce the sad passing of my brother Gary Mani Mounfield. RIP RKID.”
Liam Gallagher was among the first to respond publicly, posting on X: “IN TOTAL SHOCK AND ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATED ON HEARING THE NEWS ABOUT MANI MY HERO RIP RKID LG.” The Stone Roses’ frontman, Ian Brown, added a brief message of his own: “REST IN PEACE MANI X.”
Rowetta of Happy Mondays paid a personal tribute, writing, “Back with your Imelda, Mani. Going to miss you so much. All my love to the boys, the family & all those who knew & loved him.”
The Charlatans’ Tim Burgess shared a photo and remembered Mounfield warmly: “One of the absolute best in every way - such a beautiful friend. Love you Mani x x Never to be forgotten.”
Echo and the Bunnymen’s Ian McCulloch expressed his grief, saying, “I’m absolutely gutted to hear the news about Mani, who I have always loved and always will love, deeply and forever… Like a brother. I am in shock to be honest.”
Mounfield’s death comes nearly two years after his wife, Imelda, died of stage-four bowel cancer. The couple shared twin sons, Gene and George, and raised more than £100,000 for cancer charities.
Born in North Manchester in 1962, Mani grew up immersed in the city’s music culture, drawn to funk, Motown, northern soul and the punk spirit of bands like The Clash.
His early passion for bass eventually led him to The Stone Roses, cementing his place in Manchester music history.
