ISLAMABAD: The combined opposition, including Maulana Fazlur Rehman led JUIF, has decided to adopt a joint strategy in the wake of government’s clear intentions to lay the 27th Amendment bill in two houses of parliament.

The decision was taken during late Wednesday night huddle at the residence of Maulana Fazlur Rehman in Islamabad. Veteran politician Mahmood Khan Achakzai and ex-speaker and PTI leader Asad Qaisar met Maulana to discuss the political situation with particular reference to the 27th Amendment and notification of Achakzai as the opposition leader in the National Assembly

“Constitution should not be made a playground. We, the combined opposition, will evolve a consensus opinion on the 27th Amendment bill,” said Maulana Fazlur Rehman while talking informally to newsmen after the meeting.

He said that trust of people in the Constitution would shatter if the government continues with passage of amendments by force. “We made the government to withdraw from 34 clauses of the 26th Amendment but it is going to repeat the same,” he said.

Fazlur Rehman said that a minister had been working on the 27th Amendment for the last three months, which means that the draft was planted from somewhere else. However, he said that they have no dispute with prime minister, army chief and bureaucracy and they just want to ease atmosphere of bitterness in the country. He regretted that the PMLN government wanted to distribute Rs12,000 per head among prayer leaders of Masjids which was also Imam’s insult.

Asad Qaisar said the opposition would be united in parliament with the unanimous strategy. He said that Maulana Fazlur Rehman has also supported Mahmood Khan Achakzai as the opposition leader. “We have already submitted an application with the Speaker and Achakzai should be notified as the opposition leader at the earliest,” he said.

Senator Raja Nasir Abbas also accompanied Achakzai and Asad Qaisar. JUIF leaders Asad Mahmood, Asjad Mahmood and others were also present.
