ISLAMABAD: A superintendent of police (SP) has reportedly committed suicide in the jurisdiction of Aabpara Police Station.
SP Adeel Akbar, serving as the zonal police head of Industrial Area, died from a gunshot wound to his head in his vehicle near a hotel.
Talking to the media at PIMS, State Minister for Interior Talal Chaudhry said a high-level investigation team had been constituted under the supervision of IGP Islamabad.
To ensure a transparent and comprehensive probe, a three-member inquiry committee has been constituted after consultation with the interior minister and himself, Talal said.
The committee comprises DIG Headquarters, DIG Islamabad, and DIG Security.
According to the preliminary reports, SP Adeel Akbar allegedly took a firearm from his official gunman and shot himself in the head. He sustained severe injuries and was immediately rushed to PIMS where he was pronounced dead.
The incident has shocked the police department. SP Adeel was a senior and experienced officer. Senior police officials reached the spot to supervise the ongoing investigation.
The exact sequence of events and the motive behind the apparent suicide remain unclear. Police teams immediately cordoned off the area around the hotel to allow investigators and forensic teams to gather evidence.
Investigators are collecting details from witnesses, including the hotel staff and nearby security personnel, and are reviewing CCTV installed in the vicinity. The weapon used in the incident has been seized, and forensic experts are examining ballistic evidence to confirm the sequence of events. According to official sources, SP Akbar, originally from Gujrat District, was a member of the 46th Common of the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP) and was notably the top performer of his batch in the CSS examination. He is survived by his one-year-old daughter. Talal said SP Adeel shot himself dead inside his vehicle late in the afternoon. The incident occurred at around 4:30pm near a bridge as the officer was returning to his office.
The IG Islamabad is personally heading the investigation.
“The process of verifying the facts is currently underway... All aspects are being thoroughly examined and verified,” one official stated, emphasizing that no conclusion could be drawn until the completion of verification process.
The final findings will be shared once the IG concludes the investigation.
Speaking to the media, the IG Islamabad described the incident as “deeply tragic” for the entire police force, highlighting SP Adeel’s dedication and hard work. He confirmed that the officer shot himself dead inside his vehicle. Safe City footage reportedly “does not show any external attack; everything appears to have occurred inside the vehicle.”
The driver and a staff, who were present at the time of the incident, are being questioned.
The authorities are attempting to unlock and examine the data from the officer’s mobile phone. Colleagues are also being interviewed, given his recent transfer from Balochistan.
