SC to hear Justice Jahangiri’s appeal against IHC verdict
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court will hear an appeal next week against an interim decision of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) that barred Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri from performing judicial duties.
A five-member constitutional bench, headed by Justice Amin-ud-Din Khan, will hear the appeal on September 29, 2025. The bench also includes Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi and Justice Shahid Bilal Hussain.
It is pertinent to mention that a division bench of the Islamabad High Court, comprising Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfaraz Dogar and Justice Muhammad Azam Khan, had restrained Justice Jahangiri from performing judicial functions through an interim order. The order was issued on a writ petition filed by Lahore-based lawyer Mian Daud concerning the judge s LLB degree.
Justice Jahangiri subsequently filed an appeal in the Supreme Court challenging this order. In a gesture of solidarity, his fellow judgesJustices Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, Babar Sattar, Saman Rafat Imtiaz, and Ejaz Ishaq Khanaccompanied him to the Supreme Court on September 19, 2025, entering through the litigants gate and filing similar petitions under Article 184(3) of the Constitution. According to judicial sources, these constitutional petitions are still under scrutiny.
Meanwhile, the Islamabad Bar Council also challenged the IHC s interim order in the Supreme Court on Thursday. The council filed a petition under Article 184(3) through its elected members, seeking to set aside the IHC s order and requesting that the division bench be restrained from further proceedings in the matter until a decision is reached.
