ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) over the past few years has slapped a sweeping Rs975 million in fines on power utilities for fatal and non-fatal accidents, with Islamabad Electric Supply Company (Iesco) emerging as the most penalised, paying Rs310 million in penalties.
Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (Hesco) ranked second with Rs117 million in fines, while privatized K-Electric trailed with Rs95.5 million. Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) incurred Rs86 million, Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco) Rs85 million, Multan Electric Power Company (Mepco) Rs61 million, Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco) Rs54 million, Sukkur Electric Power Company (Sepco) Rs53 million, Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (Fesco) Rs51 million, and Quetta Electric Supply Company (Qesco) Rs42.5 million. The National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) was also fined Rs10 million.
Of the Rs975 million in penalties, Rs635 million were linked to fatal accidents and Rs330 million to non-fatal mishaps.
IESCO faced the steepest fatal accident fine of Rs100 million, followed by K-Electric at Rs95.5 million and HESCO at Rs87 million. Lesco was fined Rs76 million, Mepco Rs51 million, Gepco Rs44 million, Sepco Rs43 million, Fesco Rs41 million and Qesco Rs22.5 million. NTDC was fined Rs10 million in 2024-25 for a fatal accident involving two individuals.
Non-fatal penalties totaled Rs330 million, with Iesco again topping the list at Rs210 million. Hesco followed with Rs30 million, Qesco Rs20 million, and Pesco, Lesco, Gepco, Sepco, Fesco and Mepco with Rs10 million each. Notably, K-Electric was not fined under this category.
