Majority of PTI senators quit standing committees

ISLAMABAD: In line with the instructions given by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supremo Imran Khan, the majority of party senators have resigned from the standing committees.

Already, from the other chamber of parliament, i.e. the National Assembly, almost all PTI MNAs have stepped down from the membership of the House standing committees as well as the Public Accounts Committee. The party’s parliamentary leader, Barrister Syed Ali Zafar, Muhammad Azam Swati, Fawzia Arshad and Humayun Mohmand are among those who have tendered resignations from all the House standing committees. Senator Ali Zafar also resigned chairmanship of the Information and Broadcasting Committee, whereas Senator Humayun Mohmand has resigned from the standing committees, including the parliament committee which he headed as its chairman. He also resigned as a member of the Information Technology, Water Resources and Human Rights Committees. Azam Swati, who was recently re-elected, resigned from five standing committees. In his statement, he said that by resigning from the standing committees, he was protesting against the current parliamentary system. He sent his resignation to his parliamentary leader Ali Zafar who would send it to the chairman Senate. Similarly, Senator Falak Naz Chitrali resigned from the relevant Senate standing committees; she resigned as a member of the Climate Change, Economic Affairs, Education and Training Committees. PTI Senator Fawzia Arshad has also resigned from the standing committees. Senator Dost Muhammad and Senator Zeeshan Khanzada have resigned from the standing committees. He was also chairman of the House Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis. “The majority of our senators have resigned from the House standing committees while the remaining are on their way to do so,” said Senator Ali Zafar while talking to The News.
