ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari held a detailed discussion with Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider on Wednesday over the devastating flood situation across Punjab.

Governor Haider briefed the President on the challenges confronting flood-hit communities, especially those in remote and inaccessible areas. He highlighted that the Pakistan Red Crescent Society has expanded its services across the province, including Lahore, Hafizabad, Kasur, Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur, Narowal, and Mandi Bahauddin. Relief camps have been established, while a water treatment plant is being set up in Kartarpur to provide safe drinking water.

The governor highlighted that officials and volunteers were personally reaching out to affected families, reassuring them of state support in this difficult time.

President Zardari lauded the ongoing efforts and reaffirmed that the people of Pakistan would not be left alone in their hour of need. “This is a human tragedy that demands solidarity and urgent response,” he said.

He also underlined that Pakistan is grappling with unprecedented challenges driven by climate change. “Swollen rivers and untimely rains have created a looming risk of food insecurity across the region,” the President observed.

Stressing Pakistan’s vulnerability despite its negligible role in the global climate crisis, he remarked, “Our nation continues to pay a heavy price for it.” Urging international solidarity, President Zardari appealed to the global community to stand with Pakistan in confronting the destructive consequences of climate change.
