MANSEHRA: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati on Sunday announced that he would administer the oath to 25 members elected on seats reserved for women and minorities today (Monday).
“The governor administered the oath to provincial assembly members on the order of the Peshawar High Court[PHC], which was against the Constitution. As speaker, I moved to the same court and the chief justice of the Supreme Court, which accepted my legal position,” he told reporters after presiding over a meeting that reviewed rescue and relief activities in the calamity-hit parts of the district.
Swati said that the oath-taking of the newly elected MPAs topped the agenda of the assembly session.
“The PHC sought a session agenda including oath-taking, which we scheduled, and fixed August 25 for the process. This would be legal and in accordance with the lawful right of the speaker,” he said. Swati added that the court had also accepted their plea, allowing the speaker to administer the oath, as referred to by the Election Commission of Pakistan under Clause 255 of the Constitution.
He said that a session had been summoned earlier to administer the oath to members elected on reserved seats for women and minorities, but it could not proceed for a lack of quorum.
