ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has developed a new AI-based application to facilitate immigration and curb human smuggling, with a pilot project set to launch at Islamabad International Airport.

The initiative, announced after a high-level meeting at FIA Headquarters on Friday, follows the directives of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi to modernise the agency.

During his visit, Minister Naqvi was briefed on the app, which he described as a “vital need of the time.” He said the technology would not only help counter human smuggling but also ease passenger congestion by reducing long queues, thereby improving airport efficiency.

Alongside the launch of the AI app, several other decisions were taken to strengthen the FIA. The minister assured immediate funds to upgrade the agency’s IT infrastructure, ordered the renovation of FIA Headquarters, and directed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to hand over the newly allotted land for the FIA Academy.

Addressing the shortage of staff, he instructed that the recruitment process for all approved vacant posts be initiated without delay.

FIA Director General Raja Riffat Mukhtar informed the minister that the organisation has already transitioned to an e-office system, with all future notices to be issued through QR codes.

Emphasising the need for improved performance, the minister assured the leadership that all necessary resources would be provided. The meeting was attended by all additional director generals and directors, while zonal directors participated online.

The minister directed the FIA authorities to launch the pilot phase of the AI application at Islamabad International Airport first.
