MINGORA: The elders of Swat’s Babuzai Tehsil on Tuesday announced the formation of a jirga to address growing social and community problems in the region, particularly in Mingora city.

Speaking at the Swat Press Club, consultative committee members of “Babuzai Qaumi Taroon” jirga including Wajid Ali Khan, Muhammad Amin, Irfan Chattan, Irshad Ali Khan, Iqbal Hussain Bale, Abdullah Yousafzai, Haji Ishaq Zahid, Firdoun Khan, Mian Syed Naeem Khan, Azmat Ali, Fazal Jalal, Syed Ali and others said the jirga was created to combat rising crime, drug trafficking, immoral activities and other local challenges.

They denied reports suggesting the jirga was formed under government or establishment influence or as a rival to the Swat Qaumi Jirga, stressing that they would work alongside all community bodies, traders’ groups and civil society organisations on law and order and public welfare.

The leaders said the jirga has no political agenda and would be open to people of good character from all parties and organisations. They added that an initial 12-member committee has been established, with plans to expand through consultation.
