ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notices to the Punjab government in appeals filed by former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan in cases related to the May 9 incidents.
A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and comprising Justice Muhammad Shafi Siddiqi and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, conducted a preliminary hearing on eight appeals filed by Imran Khan against the Lahore High Court’s order dismissing his post-arrest bail petitions in the May 9 cases.
After a brief hearing, the bench issued notices to the Punjab government for August 19 and adjourned the proceedings.
The court directed both sides—the prosecution and Imran Khan’s lawyer—to prepare for addressing legal questions related to the matter and to assist the court on the next date of hearing.
During the proceedings, Chief Justice Afridi questioned the findings given by the Lahore High Court in its judgment on the bail matter. He inquired whether final observations could be made and how the merits of the case could be brought into discussion in a bail application.
The chief justice said that the apex court would avoid making any observations that could prejudice either party’s case, adding that the court was only issuing notices at this preliminary stage.
During the hearing, Salman Safdar, counsel for the PTI founder, repeatedly sought permission to address the bench; however, the chief justice did not allow him.
