Queen Camilla officially opened the newly rebuilt Ratho Library in Scotland after joining her husband King Charles, marking the launch of the Edinburgh International Book Festival's Paper Trails initiative.

The King and Queen's presence in Scotland comes after Buckingham Palace's important announcement that the royal train will be decommissioned by 2027 as a cost-saving measure.

The royal family and Edinburgh International Book Festival have jointly shared a stunning video of the Queen as she marked the launch of the festival's Paper Trails initiative.

The video was captioned: "Earlier today we were delighted to be joined by Her Majesty The Queen to open the new Ratho Library, and launch our exciting new partnership with Edinburgh City Libraries, Paper Trails. "

It continued: "Paper Trails sees the Book Festival partner with five local libraries – Ratho Hub Library, Muirhouse Library, Liberton High School Library (opening in 2026), Streetreads, and the Mobile Library service – to develop programming tailored to each library’s specific user and community needs.

"From supporting young writers’ career development to creating intergenerational storytelling circles, and providing creative outlets for marginalised communities, Paper Trails aims to tackle social isolation by encouraging library use, developing creative skills, and highlighting libraries as essential spaces for creativity and community gathering."

Camilla's visit to the facility highlighted its significance as a community hub, particularly after the previous library failed to reopen following COVID-19.

The project, supported by author Sir Ian Rankin, will operate across five libraries with innovative programmes designed to engage local residents.
