Former president Donald Trump has sparked controversy once again with his latest remarks comparing himself to Nelson Mandela. He expressed an unexpected sentiment towards his looming legal troubles.

The former president openly welcomed the possibility of incarceration for violating a gag order in his upcoming New York trial.

In a recent post on Truth Social, the former president expressed his willingness to face jail time for violating a gag order in his upcoming New York hush money trial. Trump wrote, “I will gladly become a Modern Day Nelson Mandela — It will be my GREAT HONOR,” while targeting New York State Supreme Court Judge Juan Merchan, who is overseeing the case.

In the past, he likened his legal battles to Mandela's struggle and even to the persecution of Jesus Christ.

Trump has criticised Merchan, calling him compromised. He suggested a conflict of interest due to his daughter's role at a progressive consulting firm. He has repeatedly posted about the judge's daughter since the initial gag order was imposed in late March. Donald Trump's outbursts on Saturday are his latest about the judge's daughter.

The trial is set to commence on April 15, with jury selection for the state's criminal prosecution of Trump on 34 counts of falsifying business documents. The charges are linked to an alleged hush money payment made to Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential election.

Trump's rhetoric remains confrontational, targeting not just the legal system but also Judge Merchan's family.

In a similar situation last October, Judge Arthur Engoron fined Trump $10,000 for violating a gag order in a civil case.

The judge later expanded the order prohibiting Trump from making public statements about the case's witnesses, jurors, lawyers, court staff, and their families. But, Trump continues to challenge the boundaries of his gag orders.
