PESHAWAR: At least 16 people including police personnel were martyred in a suicide attack at District and Sessions Court in Shabqadar tehsil of Charsadda on Monday.
Senior police official Sohail Khalid said three police personnel were among the martyred, adding that 20 others were wounded in the blast.
DIG Saeed Wazir said that the suicide bomber was trying to enter the judicial complex and he blew himself up when the police stopped him at the main entrance.
“Policemen were deployed here for security duty. The bomber tried to force himself inside the court. He had a weapon and fired shots before blowing up his explosives,” he said and added that the injured included five police constables.
Security forces arrived at the site of the blast and cordoned off the area.
The injured were shifted to nearby hospitals.
“A woman constable was also injured in the blast,” said DSP Fayyaz Khan, who confirmed the explosion was a suicide bombing.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has strongly condemned the terror attack and expressed grief over the loss of lives.
