RAWALPINDI: Mumtaz Qadri, convicted for killing Punjab Governor Salman Taseer was executed in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail early on Monday, jail and Punjab police have confirmed.
Qadri was hanged after President Mamnoon Hussain dismissed his clemency appeal.
Qadri was awarded death sentence by Anti-Terrorism court for killing Salman Taseer in Islamabad in January 2011.
The Supreme Court had also upheld the death sentence in October last.
The jail authorities arranged meeting of Mumtaz Qadri with his family and later dead body was handed over to his family members.
Qadri was hanged at around 4:30 a.m.
Protests broke out within hours by supporters of Mumtaz Qadri, who consider him a hero.
