LAHORE: Jamiat Ulemai-e-Islam chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Friday drew strong criticism from members of the Punjab Assembly which the cleric termed as the house of Zanmurids, an Urdu language term for uxorious husbands.
The Maulana had given the remarks while responding to questions regarding Protection of Women against Violence Act unanimously passed by the provincial assembly. .
Members of the Punjab Assembly asked the Maulana through a privilege motion to tender apology for his derogatory remarks.
The Punjab Assembly had passed the bill on Wednesday, making all crimes against the women an offence including domestic violence, emotional, psychological and economic abuse, verbal abuse, stalking, abetment of an offence, and cyber crimes.
According to the new law, a toll-free number (UAN) will also be introduced to receive complaints while a district protection committee will be setup to investigate women’s complaints in this regard.
