PU to celebrate its 125 years

PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Arif Butt Wednesday announced to start celebrations of 125 years of the university in the 2nd or 3rd week of December. Addressing journalists at New Campus on Wednesday, the VC said that Punjab University would provide all-out facilities including modern labs and laboratories to the students and teachers to achieve academic excellence and include the PU among the top 500 best universities of the world. He asked the teachers to play their due role in enhancing the research quality. He urged the students to consider their teacher as role model. He said that media had a great impact on nation and they were providing information at door step.



Rescue 1122 terminates 7 for fake documents

THE Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue 1122) has terminated seven of its employees from the service when their documents were found fake during the verification process. Punjab Emergency Service has warned all the candidates, applying for recruitment in Rescue 1122, that they should not use unfair means for employment otherwise strict action will be taken against them. The service has a strict system of scrutiny and verification of credentials of the candidates so that recruitment on merit can be ensured. It may be further added that employment in the service is strictly on merit basis; therefore, candidates should not be fooled by cheaters or dodgers.



32 shopkeepers fined Rs 57,000 in city

SPECIAL Magistrates on Wednesday imposed fine of Rs 57000 on 32 shopkeepers of the city on overcharging, hoarding and not displaying the price lists issued by the City District Government Lahore (CDGL) while 11 shopkeepers were arrested and jailed for two to five days. The CDGL has also praised the efforts of Ravi Town magistrate Hafiz Muhammad Ahmed for his best performance. Meanwhile, a FIR was lodged

against Nadeem Buffet and Catering of Faisal Town on charging Nann price Rs 10. District Officer Livestock also conducted raids on different areas of city and registered cases against 24 chicken meat sellers on overcharging. He also arrested 8 butchers who were selling mutton and beef on meatless day.



‘Sharifs playing reformers’ role’

PML-N Punjab Professional Wing President Dr Asif Saeed Kirmani has said that Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif are playing the reformers’ role in politics and their struggle to replace the present dictatorial system with a genuine democratic system would bring forth good results. Talking to a delegation of Professional Wing, Faisalabad, Kirmani said there was dire need for a system in which common man could have equal opportunities, improved living standards and unhindered access to quality education, health and justice as promised by the Quaid-i-Azam. He said although Sharifs had chosen a difficult path yet they would emerge victorious as the masses are behind them.

PU VC wants international exposition of research

THERE is a lot of potential in our research, which needs to be exposed at the international level for implementing it at mass level, said Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Arif Butt Wednesday. He said this while addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Digital Library at the Department of Islamic Studies of the Sheikh Zayed Islamic Centre (SZIC). Dean Faculty of Islamic Studies Prof Dr Samar Fatima, Chairman Department of Islamic Studies Dr Shabbir Ahmad Mansoori, teachers and students of the departments were also present. The VC said PU is the first University to digitalize its library and provide access to its students to international-level research. This would help improve the standard of research, he added. The VC visited all sections of the library and appreciated the staff’s efforts.



GCP official appeals for due benefits

THE general assistant of the Ghee Corporation of Pakistan has appealed to the Supreme Court of Pakistan and higher authorities to take action against GCP officials who did not give him his due benefits despite SC orders. In a press statement issued on Wednesday, Mohammad Ramazan said that he was given a golden shake hand after his term finished and that the SC has ordered the department to give him all due benefits of retirement from 31-07-2003 while the department officials especially the finance director have denied him all the benefits. He said the department had taken a plea that lawyers opine that he (Ramzan) did not deserve to get benefits due to SC decision. He said that he had also issued several petitions to the GCP management along with legal advice of eminent advocates who unanimously opine that he be given the benefits in line with SC orders. He has appealed to higher judicial authorise to take action against the department for depriving him of his rights. He said he was poor and could not pursue his case further.



LHC acquits two convicts

A DIVISION Bench of the Lahore High Court, upholding the death sentence of two convicts on charges of murdering six persons, acquitted two others giving them benefit of doubt. The accused were awarded death sentence on six counts and fined Rs.100,000 by an Anti Terrorism Court of Lahore. The bench, comprising Justice Mian Najam-uz-Zaman and Justice Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhry, confirmed the death sentence of Shafiq and Tahir, who were nominated in the FIR, and acquitted Abdul Rauf and Arif who were not nominated in the FIR.



Speedy work on Judicial Complex ordered

PUNJAB Minister for Communication and works Ch Zaheer-ud-Din Wednesday directed the officers to accelerate the pace of work on the Judicial Complex phase-I, Lahore, being constructed at a cost of Rs. 230.843 million. He was chairing a meeting at his office.The meeting was informed that Additional District and Session Judge Courts block ground, 1st and 2nd floor would be constructed at the Complex. The meeting was also apprised that Rs 10 million had been spent on this project while Rs. 20 million had been allocated during the current fiscal year.



5 cities get 3,35,706 flour bags

AS many as 3,35,706 bags of 20-kg flour were Tuesday supplied to five big cities of Punjab namely Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Multan and Faisalabad. A handout issued Wednesday stated that 120,872 bags had been supplied in Rawalpindi, 88,198 in Lahore, 48,947 in Gujranwala, 38,189 in Multan and 39,500 in Faisalabad.
