September 09, 2007
The 27th death anniversary of the legendary Sindh-based singer Ustad Manzoor Ali Khan is being observed on Sunday (today). He died on September 9, 1980 in his late 50s in the Sindh town of Tando Adam where he had spent the last years of his life.

He belonged to the fifth Gwalior Gharana (family of Indo-Pakistani music) and was the son of Jammalo Khan. He was an outstanding singer of his time with no match particularly in Sindhi classical music. Apart from Sindhi, he sang in Urdu and other Asian languages, including Persian and Arabic.

Critics and his admirers say that the way Ustad Manzoor Ali Khan sang was marvelous as he with his mellifluous voice could change the environment and atmosphere of the venue of his performance.

Born in 1930 in Shikarpur district of Sindh, Ustad Manzoor Ali Khan was intrinsically inclined to music as he used to learn the music and singing from his elders.

He was awarded presidential pride of performance award in 1978. Many of his students and descendants today are noted singers associated with films and television.
