      36-hour water suspension in metropolis

      KARACHI: Some city areas including Liaquatabad, Sharifabad, FC Area, Nazimabad, Baldia, Gul Bahar, Old Golimar, Greeks Colony, Raxer Village, PAF Base Masroor, Maripur and Kannup would not get water supply for 36 hours from Wednesday morning, said a spokesman for the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) here on Tuesday. He said that water supply to these areas would be suspended from 6am on Wednesday to 6pm on Thursday, due to the shifting of water pipeline and change of valves at the Liaquatabad Underpass. He requested the citizens to use water conservatively, and also store it up for daily needs.

      KARACHI: Hot and humid weather has been forecast for the city over the next 24 hours, with maximum temperature to range between 35 to 37 degrees Celsius. On Tuesday, the maximum temperature recorded was 35 degrees and minimum 25 degrees Celsius. Humidity was 54 per cent.

      KU to have a lift

      Karachi: The Karachi University Employees Welfare Association has thanked the chairman of the Chemistry department for approving the grant for the installation of a lift in the department. The association said that that the installation of the elevator will not only help the students and teachers of the department, it will also facilitate the employees that carry chemicals to the upper floors. Meanwhile, the controller of examinations, KU, has advised the LLM (Final) students to observe the instructions for the preparation and submission of their Theses for the LLM (Final) Examination-2006. The details could be obtained from the respective Law Colleges.

      Rangers to check water thefts

      KARACHI: Owing to the raising demands of small farmers that was endorsed by the Sindh Irrigation Department, troops of Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) has been deployed to stop water theft and misuse of irrigation water in the interior Sindh, said a spokesman for Sindh Rangers on Tuesday. The irrigation department of the government of Sindh has requested for the services of Pakistan Rangers to ensure impartial distribution of canal water and prevent water thefts in the interior of Sindh and said that Rangers would provide security cover to the field staff of the irrigation department and would take necessary remedial measures to stop water theft by certain influential farmers. He said that it is pertinent to mention that last year too, Rangers played a pivotal role in checking the water theft and ensuring equitable distribution of water to the tail-enders and the role of Rangers was greatly appreciated by the masses at large.

      Police foil robbery bid

      KARACHI: The New Town police had foiled a robbery bid in front of the Old Sabzi Mandi on Tuesday night.TPO Gulshan-e-Iqbal, said that five robbers entered a flat owned by Begum Azmatullah in Jawad Courts and started looting. The people informed the Madadgar 15 which reached the area and a shoot-out occurred. After a brief encounter, the police arrested Aamir Hussain and Khurram Abdullah, which yielded two TT pistols and valuables from their possession. One of the robbers Amjad, was killed in the shoot-out and a watchman identified as Anwarzaib, also died as a result of the cross fire.
