Pakistan only 15 polio cases short of breaking own 14-year record

September 30, 2014

ISLAMABAD: The confirmation of another 10 polio cases in Pakistan late Monday night has taken the current year’s national case count to 184.Pakistan is now only 15 cases short of breaking its own 14-year-old record of 199 polio cases in the year 2000.
According to the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, six of the 10 cases are from Fata, and two each from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Sindh.Children who have been affected by the crippling poliovirus from Fata are a 10-month-old male child from area Jani Khel, village Bichki Wazir, Tehsil FR Bannu; a six-month-old girl child from area Bakka Khel, village Zalol Khel, Tehsil FR Bannu; six-month-old male child from area Mera Aka Khel, village Nawaz Khan Kalay, Tehsil Bara, Khyber Agency; seven-month-old male child from area Ajab Talab, village Shin Drang, Tehsil Bara, Khyber Agency; 15-month-old girl child from area Ajab Talab, village Shin Drang, Tehsil Bara, Khyber Agency; and 12-month-old girl child from area Mera Aka Khel, village Gud Malang, Tehsil Bara, Khyber Agency.

The boy is a victim of parental refusal. There are still areas in Pakistan where parents are skeptical about the quality of polio vaccine being administered to children, and as such, do not permit polio teams to administer the drops to their children.
A 12-month-old girl child from Union Council 4, village Afghan Abadi, Moosa Market, Gadap Town, Karachi, Sindh, and a 25-month-old male child from Union Council 5, Junjar Goth, Madina Madarsa, Gadap Town, Karachi, have also been affected due to parental refusal.
Of the 184 cases confirmed across Pakistan so far this year, Fata has inflicted the mightiest blow to the country’s polio eradication efforts with 127

cases, followed by KPK (33), Sindh (17), Balochistan (5) and Punjab (2).
