LAHORE: The Sunni Ittehad Council has termed the anti-army statement of Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Syed Munawar Hassan, which said those fighting for the US cause in the country could not be called martyrs, and announced to launch a movement against him if he did not retract his statement.
A meeting of the SIC, the largest platform of Barelvi Islamist parties, on Monday demanded the Supreme Court hold Munawar’s trial for treason, and announced to observe the Ashura Day as the day of condemnation of Munawar and support for the Pakistan Army’s martyrs and those killed by the Taliban.
The meeting chaired by SIC President Sahibzada Hamid Raza declared that on the Ashura Day, the SIC parties would pass resolutions condemning Munawar and praising martyrs of the army. The meeting asked the JI to remove Munawar from his office if he did not withdraw the controversial statement. The meeting announced to call a meeting of the parties opposed to terrorism after Ashura.
