Ulema urge govt to announce ceasefire

ISLAMABAD: Welcoming the positive statement of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), prominent Ulema of Pakistan have urged the government and security forces to immediately announce a ceasefire to rid the country of the raging bloodshed and anarchy.
In response to an earlier appeal by religious scholars, the TTP had announced on Tuesday to stop its activities immediately after the declaration of a ceasefire from the government.“We welcome the prompt, positive and respectful response of the TTP and hope that both sides will try their utmost to create a favourable atmosphere for peace talks,” said a joint statement issued by the Ulema.
The scholars also hoped that the government and TTP will not allow any stalemate in the dialogue process.Expressing deep sorrow over the loss of precious lives and volatile law and order situation in the country, prominent Ulema offered prayers for the security and prosperity of Pakistan and its citizens.
In a special meeting held on Monday, the top religious scholars of Deoband school of thought had appealed to the government and TTP to immediately declare a ceasefire “in the name of Allah and His Prophet Muhammad (SAW)”.
The meeting was chaired by President Wafaqul Madaris Maulana Salim Ullah Khan and attended by Mufti-i-Azam Pakistan Mufti Muhammad Rafi Usmani, Sheikhul Islam Maulana Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani, head of Jamia Uloomul Islamia Binnori Town Maulana Dr Abdul Razzaq Iskandar, Maulana Fazal Muhammad, Maulana Sher Ali Shah of Jamia Haqqania, spiritual leader from tribal areas Maulana Mufti Mukhtaruddin Shah, Mufti Syed Adnan Kakakhel and Mufti Abu Labab of Jamiatur Rasheed, and Maulana Muhammad Hassan of Jamia Madina Lahore.
The TTP had convened an emergency meeting in the North Waziristan Agency on Monday to discuss the appeal of Ulema.After the meeting, a spokesman of TTP Sahidullah Shahid had told The News that talks with the government will go on and TTP will make all out efforts for the success of the dialogue.“The Ulema are the most respected people and we will not disappoint them and will stop our activities as soon as the government declares a ceasefire,” he had said.
