      ISLAMABAD: Fayyaz Ahmad Leghari, a Grade-21 officer of the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP), on Friday became the ninth director general of Federal Investigation agency (FIA) during the tenure of the present government.

      The Establishment Division notified his appointment along with shifting of his predecessor, Javed Iqbal, to the Narcotics Control as secretary.Zafar Abbas Luk, who was posted as FIA chief for one day, has been appointed as inspector general of National Highways and Motorway Police (NH&MP). He replaces Wajid Khan Durrani who will retire on May 27, 2012.

      Fayyaz Leghari has earlier served as Karachi police chief and as inspector general of police (IGP) Sindh but was removed on the order of Supreme Court following the killing of Sarfraz Shah by the Rangers in broad daylight.

      Leghari joined PSP on March 29, 1979 and will retire on May 2, 2015. Hailing from Dera Ghazi Khan, he was promoted to Grade-20 in 2004.Zafar Abbas Luk was removed following his protest over the alleged kidnapping of a former accountant of the Sharif business empire. Other PPP-appointed FIA chiefs included Tariq Pervez, Tariq Khosa, Zafarullah Khan, Wasim Ahmad, Malik Iqbal, Tahseen Anwar Shah and Javed Iqbal. They had to go either on the orders of the Supreme Court or because of their refusal to go with the government in different cases.Zafarullah Khan, Wasim, Malik and Tahseen confronted the Supreme Court and were disposed of by the apex court. Tariq Khosa and Javed Iqbal stood for the rule of law.
