ANP leader among three killed in Swat

MINGORA: Militants stormed the Hujra of ruling Awami National Party (ANP) local leader Muzaffar Ali Khan in Swat early on Saturday and shot him dead, along with two other people, official and local sources said.
The sources said that the militants scaled the walls of the Hujra of Muzaffar Ali Khan in the Shakardarra area of the Matta Tehsil at around 3:00am and launched the attack.
They hurled hand-grenades and opened indiscriminate fire, killing the ANP leader, a police official, Abdullah and a guest, Sher Rehman. Another cop, Zaminzada, sustained injuries in the attack.
A landlord of the area, Muzaffar Ali Khan was the president of the ANP Matta Tehsil.
The militants had killed his son, Aftab Ali, and brother Mukhtiar in an attack in 2008.
According to police, the militants had burned down his house during the attack owing to which he had to leave his native town.
Talking to The News, Niamat Ali, son of the slain politician, said the family had been receiving threats from the militants since the time insurgents were calling the shots in Swat.
The police registered first information report (FIR) against unknown persons.
A spokesman for the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, Swat chapter, Omar Hassan Ahrabi, phoned reporters from an unknown place and claimed responsibility for the killing.
He threatened to continue attacking politicians, government and Army officials in the area.
Meanwhile, politicians, elders and peace activists condemned the assassination and called upon the government to provide security to those exposed to threats.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Information and Culture Mian Iftikhar Hussain condemned the killing of the ANP leader, saying such terrorist acts were hazardous for the peace of Swat.
Talking to a delegation of Nowshera Press Club, the minister said that the government would continue the mission to eliminate terrorists and militants at all costs.
