February 12, 2011
ISLAMABAD: The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has appointed Tariq Khosa, a retired bureaucrat of impeccable integrity, as its advisor on rule of law and criminal justice in Pakistan.
The advisorship to a Pakistani on Pakistan is considered to be a great honour especially when offered to a man with matching repute.
The UNODC had launched a four-year programme in June 2010 and Khosa will assist in its proper execution.
The UNODC programme titled: Country Programme on Rule of Law and Criminal Justice, has been designed for improving the capacity of Pakistani law enforcement agencies and other components of the criminal justice system to meet challenges posed by the menace of organised crime. Apart from his new assignment, he will continue to function as Member Executive Committee of France-based Interpol till 2012. “I hope to make a difference in improving the quality of criminal justice system in Pakistan and play a humble role in promoting rule of law,” Khosa said recording his impression on his new assignment.
Khosa, an officer of police service, has had a brilliant career in service, served at important positions like Inspector General of Police in Balochistan, Director General Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and federal secretary of Anti-Narcotics.
Khosa performed par excellence as a bureaucrat and never bowed before any pressure. He was considered an officer who would discharge his duty without any fear or favour that sometimes cost him removal from important positions. Instead all three Khosa brothers enjoy good repute in their respective field. One of his brothers, Asif Saeed Khosa, is judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and the other, Nasir Khosa, is sitting Chief Secretary of Punjab.
