Jam assures cyclone-hit fishermen of compensation

QUETTA: Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Muhammad Yousaf on Sunday announced that the

government would compensate damage caused to fishermen by the recent cyclone and directed the officials concerned to take immediate steps for preventing sea intrusion into the coastal areas.

The assurance came during a briefing held in Gwadar on the damage and devastation caused by the recent cyclone that hit the Arabian Sea coast of the province a few days back.

The Gwadar district coordination officer (DCO), briefing the chief minister and Chief Secretary K B Rind, stated that a total of 280 fishing boats were damaged while some had sunk as a result of the cyclone that hit Gwadar, Jiwani, Pasni and Ormara harbours.

Earlier, members of the Gwadar Action Committee called on the chief minister in Sur Bandar in Gwadar and informed him about the damage caused by the cyclone.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister directed the Gwadar district administration to check sea intrusion by building a wall along the seashore.

The DCO was further directed to evolve a comprehensive plan for resolving the land erosion problem on a permanent basis and submit a report at the earliest.

The chief minister assured the people of Gwadar that funds would be released for the purpose.

Referring to the steps being taken by the government for the welfare of fishermen, he said a residential colony would be established for them very soon.

He said the completion of the Coastal Highway was directly benefiting the local people in general and the fishermen in particular, due to which economic activities had increased.

He said President General Pervez Musharraf was taking interest in the development of Gwadar and other coastal areas of Balochistan, which would benefit the people of the areas.
