MINGORA: A police constable and two pro-government peace committee members were killed when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a local leader of the Awami National Party (ANP) in Bara Bandai village in Swat’s Kabal tehsil, official sources said on Wednesday.
The sources said unknown persons, who are believed to be militants, opened fire on the car of the ANP leader Niamat Ali Khan near a security forces checkpost in Bara Bandai in Kabal tehsil.
The anti-militants peace committee member Hazrat Hussain and a constable of the special police force Nooruddin were killed while the ANP leader sustained injuries in the assault. The attackers also opened fire on another car when they were fleeing the area, leaving the general secretary of the peace committee in Bara Bandai village, Khalilullah and another peace body member Said Nawab injured.
The injured were taken to the Saidu Sharif Hospital where Khalilullah succumbed to his injuries. The injured Niamat Ali Khan and Said Nawab were shifted to the Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar.
Soon after the incident, several suspects were arrested in the search operation launched in the area. So far, five family members of the ANP leader Niamat Ali Khan, including his father Muzaffar Ali Khan who was the party president in Matta tehsil, have been killed in targetted killing by the Taliban militants. The family has stood by the ANP and against the militants despite its losses in recent years.
