April 01, 2007
KARACHI: The four-day, first-round 2006-07 Pentangular Cup Cricket Championship match between Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) and Habib Bank Limited (HBL) eventually ended in a rather tame draw, on the final day here at the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) Sports Complex Stadium on Saturday.

The highlight of the last day yesterday was an unbeaten 115 by KRL’s batsman Azhar Ali, as his team were taken to a score of 282 runs for the loss of only two wickets in the second innings by the final draw of stumps.

Habib Bank, with a score of 393, however had on Friday’s third day taken a slender 19-run first innings lead over KRL, who had earlier compiled 374 all out. KRL resumed their second innings at the overnight 55 for one yesterday morning.

Azhar Ali, a 22-year-old from Lahore, has played for Pakistan at the Under-15s, 17s and 19s levels for several seasons starting in 2000.

Yesterday’s knock was his career’s maiden century in his 10th first-class match.

In the first innings, Azhar had made the top-score of 84 runs. His unbeaten 115 saw him occupy the crease for almost six and three-quarter hours as he faced 324 deliveries and hit 15 fours.

After the first KRL wicket had fallen at 3, Azhar went on to add 128 runs for the second wicket with Saeed Bin Nasir whose 75 came off 146 balls with 10 fours and a six. Later, the unbroken third-wicket stand between Azhar and skipper Mohammad Wasim, 68 not out off 186 balls with six fours, yielded 151 runs.

Habib Bank now play their second round match against Punjab, here at the National Stadium from Tuesday, April 3.

From the same day, KRL will meet the fifth team in the competition, the combined North West Frontier Province (NWFP)-Balochistan outfit, here at the United Bank Limited (UBL) Sports Complex Ground No.1.
