Use of Sui gas
February 29, 2012
In a local TV channel’s show, aired on February 25, the host claimed that the natural gas from Sui fields was used for setting up fertiliser plants in Sindh thus depriving the Baloch people of their right. This is factually incorrect. Primarily, such big, capital-intensive and high-tech projects are never established without conducting detailed techno-economic feasibilities. Only the most appropriate economic site is selected keeping in view the availability of raw materials and skilled manpower, proximity to market, transportation cost of finished goods etc.
Secondly, the referred fertiliser plants obviously were Engro (Dharki), NFC (Mirpur Mathelo) and FFC (Machi Goth) which are not run on natural gas from Sui fields but on gas from the Marri field located in Sindh. Due to high carbon dioxide content and low-heating value, the gas from the Marri field is largely consumed by fertiliser plants which use natural gas as a raw material.
