January 09, 2012
Gutka and mein purri are being openly sold in Karachi despite imposition of ban by Sindh Home Department on its manufacturing and sale. Sindh Home Department had imposed ban under Section 144 on the manufacturing and sale of gutka and mein purri all over Sindh, including Karachi, a week ago.
Talking to The News, Dr Qaisar Sajjad said that raids should be conducted on the outlets and houses in the city where guta was being manufactured. He said that the government needs to take concrete steps to ensure ban or gutka and mein purri since youngsters had been getting addicted to these items that could cause oral cancer.
Additional Chief Secretary Home Waseem Ahmed, however, told The News on Tuesday that this ban had been imposed on the directives of Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah. Sindh Home Minister Manzoor Wassan was not available for comments.
