The Arts Council of Pakistan election campaign are in full swing as supporters of ‘Shahrah-e Quaid Panel’ (SQP) and ‘Ahmad Shah – Ejaz Faroqui Panel’ (ASEFP) are leaving no stone unturned to vote for their nominated candidates.
Besides, famous businessmen, lawyers, artistes, writers and media persons are making announcements to either support SQP or ASEFP. Some 4,954 registered voters; out of 6,400 (which is the total strength) will be able to caste their voters on March 18, 2012 (Sunday).
Famous actor Omar Sharif, who has been nominated as President by the SQP, has chosen to level allegations against the nominated candidate of ASEFP, saying that he had doubts about the fairness and transparency of elections of the Arts Council.
Shareef, who addressed several meetings, said that he was not provided the actual list of members by the outgoing body as it feared that the SQP would contact and convince them to reject ASEP. He argued that he and his nominated team were committed to serve intellectuals, writers, artistes and all members of Arts Council and had no other interests.
On the other hand, the nominated President of ASEFP Muhammad Ahmad Shah appears to be very confident of his panel’s victory and as he adds that he and his team had no personal interests in promoting art and culture or holding the International Urdu Conference.
He declared that he and his team would now hold the Fifth Annual International Urdu Conference after their victory.
Prof Ejaz Faruqui is contesting as Secretary from ASEFP, Muhammad Ahmed Khan as Vice President, whereas Muhammad Amin Yousuf and Dr Huma Meer are to contest for the posts of Joint Secretary and Treasurer respectively.
Fatima Surria Bajia, Actor, Abid Ali, Prof Sahar Ansari, Farhad Zaidi, Athar Waqar Azeem, Naqash Kazimi, Dr SM Qaiser Sajjad, Abdul Majeed Abdani, Syed Sa’adat Ali Jaffery, Muhammad Iqbal Latif and Shehnaz Siddiqui have been nominated as members of the governing

body by ASEFP.
The SQP has nominated Syed Azfar Rizvi as Secretary, Rizwan Siddiqui as Vice President, and Khalid A’arien as Joint Secretary and Najmuddin Shaikh as Treasurer. Those contesting for governing body members on behalf of SQP include Amjad Fareed Sabiri, Saifur Rehman Girami, Shakeel Siddiqui, Aftab Alam, Javed Saba, Tajdar Af’adil, Mansoor Zuberi, Syed Sultan Haider, Basheer Sadozai, Uzma Ali Khan, Naila Jaffery and Durdana Shahab.
